Rivian's key model R2 pure electric SUV will launch this spring at a price of $58,000
Key Points
On Thursday, Rivian announced it will introduce its key strategic model, the R2 electric SUV, this spring, with the initial version priced at about $58,000.
The first released R2 midsize vehicle will be the Performance Launch Edition, equipped with:
The vehicle delivers a maximum power of 656 horsepower, peak torque of 609 lb-ft, and accelerates from 0-60 mph in just 3.6 seconds.
Previously, Rivian promoted an entry-level version starting at $45,000, but this lower-margin model is not expected to be available until late 2027.
Current Rivian models all start above $70,000.
R2 is a “Critical Moment” for Rivian
After the company has lost billions of dollars and demand for existing models (R1 SUV, pickup, and electric delivery vans) declines, R2 is seen as Rivian’s make-or-break.
Visually, R2 is essentially a smaller version of the R1 SUV, but the company has redesigned its software, electrical architecture, and components to improve efficiency and profitability.
Rivian founder and CEO RJ Scaringe has promised investors that R2 will be a turning point for the company’s profitability, sales, and technology.
The company also plans to introduce hands-free, eyes-free autonomous driving features to better compete with Tesla, the leader in the U.S. electric vehicle industry.
Morgan Stanley analyst Andrew Perrotta said:
“R2 is a key transitional model for Rivian to scale into a mass-market automaker, thereby driving operational leverage across the entire business (including R1).”
However, institutions like Barclays have expressed skepticism about R2’s demand. Rivian plans to make R2 the main model at its existing Illinois plant and the upcoming multi-billion-dollar Georgia factory, which could have an annual capacity of up to 400,000 units.
Barclays analyst Dan Levy wrote in an August investor report:
“Recent policy headwinds (such as the expiration of the $7,500 IRA tax credit, reduced subsidies, and rising tariffs) increase uncertainty around R2’s sales prospects, and it is likely to launch during a period of weak U.S. EV demand.”
In addition to federal policy changes, many automakers are reducing EV plans or incurring billions in losses due to slower-than-expected EV adoption when R2 launches.
Scaringe stated that Rivian hopes R2 will not only compete with Tesla’s Model Y (the best-selling EV globally) but also rival traditional internal combustion engine vehicles.
R2’s size, range, acceleration, and other core metrics are close to the Model Y, which starts at about $40,000 and already features many of the driving technologies R2 aims to implement.
R2 Launch Timeline (announced Thursday)
All-wheel drive, up to 330 miles range, 656 horsepower / 609 lb-ft torque
Dual-motor all-wheel drive, 450 horsepower / 537 lb-ft torque, up to 330 miles range
Rear-wheel drive, 350 horsepower / 355 lb-ft torque, up to 345 miles range
Estimated range over 275 miles, limited other details
Rivian’s 2026 performance guidance:
Scaringe told investors that 2025 will be Rivian’s foundational year, and 2026 will be the company’s inflection point.
