What is a MEMO? Why is it necessary to fill it in when transferring coins to an exchange?
Many people are confused when transferring XRP, XLM, or BNB to the exchange – why do I need to fill in a “MEMO” or “TAG” in addition to the Wallet Address? What happens if I forget to fill it in?
In simple terms: MEMO is like an ID number.
To save costs, many users share a Wallet Address on the exchange. However, to ensure that the money is accurately credited to your account, a MEMO “tag” is needed for differentiation. Without it, the exchange has no way of knowing whose money it is, and your coins may end up stuck there.
Which coins require MEMO?
Other coins (like BTC, ETH) can use a normal Address, no need to fill in MEMO.
How to find MEMO?
What happens if you forget to fill in the MEMO?
The cryptocurrency can be sent out, but the exchange does not receive it, and it ultimately gets stuck in the Address. To get the funds back, you have to deal with customer service, and there's no guarantee of success.
So remember: XRP, XLM, BNB must all be sent to the exchange, and MEMO cannot be missed.
