Deep Tide TechFlow news, on March 27, according to Forbes, Ripple and Stellar founder, cryptocurrency billionaire Jed McCaleb has pledged $1 billion through his nonprofit organization Astera Institute for the research and development of artificial intelligence systems based on the principles of the human brain, aiming to achieve artificial general intelligence (AGI). McCaleb believes that the current mainstream Transformer architecture can only perform the single function of “prediction,” lacking key capabilities such as planning, decision-making, and motivation, and that AI research needs to return to the learning mechanisms of the human brain to restart.
Astera Institute has hired former DeepMind executive Dileep George to lead AGI research, with plans to expand the team to 30 researchers this year and publicly publish research results. In addition, McCaleb has also committed an additional $600 million for neuroscience research, which includes implanting brain-computer interfaces in mice, monkeys, and even humans to record patterns of neural activity and translate them into new AI architectures.
